cold starts and high rpm
For all you people in the cold weather states, do you find that the LS takes a long time to warm up?
I know this is kinda a weird question, but for me, one factor of the car engine is warmed up is when the tach stays below 1000 when idling, like when its been driven around the whole day.
My previous experience with an S-class in the cold weather is that when started up, the RPM would stay higher at 1300-1600 RPM, and after just 30 seconds, it would drop to just below 1000 RPM, and it would be ready to drive. (althought I'm not saying you cannot start driving before it drops)
However, my LS tends to stay high in 1500 range and it will take a long time, about 5+ minutes, before it would come down to the regular 'heated up' idling RPMs.
Anyone know why is this?

Mine also takes a few minutes to warm up. But I always take it real easy with the rpm's until I see that the temp gauge is showing a reading and not just at the bottom of the gauge. Maybe 3 minutes.

I'm not certain, but I expect that it's programmed to run at higher RPM (until its up to operating temperatures) for emissions purposes. It may also be for lubrication reasons. For example, running at a higher idle is easier on the valve train than running at a low idle because lubrication is a little bit better at higher idle. Either way, it's not a bad thing that it idles a little higher.
