A/c 1994 Ls?

I am having a low whining noise when running my A/C. Only comes on when I engage the A/C. It still works fine and and blows cold air, but I assume this is the start of the compressor going bad?

I have had ,about 40,000 miles ago, the dryer, expansion valve and evaporator replaced. I am Thinking the compressor is finally giving out, 145,000 miles later!!

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to diagnose. I got a little concerned after reading tons of the comments regarding A/C work. Wow!!

Well that sounds about right, mine made a whining noise for about 1 year before the compressor finally seized. I spent about $350 CND dollars for a used compressor and another $250 for other various parts, freon and labour.
