Going Crazy! Please help!
***Lexus Can't even figure this out*** *** Please help***
I have a 1998 Lexus LS 400 with 90k miles that only came with 1 key. I bought a second key from the dealership and they have been unable to program it. They can't do it with their reader or with the step of steps listed on this forum. Also the trunk key button on my remote that came with the car will only open the trunk if you stand close to the driver door. If you stand anywhere else the trunk will not open but you can unlock and lock the doors at ease. They say I might need a new ECU for the security system but they say Lexus does not even make this part anymore...
Basically IMO they don't really know what the hell is going on and they have been holding onto my car for two days.
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks,
Kevin

Run don't walk from that dealer
My guess is since you are in "AZ" you are at one of the boutique shops in the NE valley that only focuses on sales, I'm with Drifter on this one, run away. You still have a functioning key. Take the car to an independent import repair like Penkse up at the Airpark, assuming my geography guess was right . Go see J.B. there. The stuff the Lexus dealer told you hurts my ears. lol

As to your other thread, DON'T buy another ECU. Get your car to a good Lexus technician/dealer and then go from there.
My thoughts:
1.They probably didn't get the right key so the ECU is not able to accept the sequence. Verify the exact part #. It needs to have the exact same FCC ID number.
2. The key you currently have that works is a master key? If they are attempting the sequence with the valet key, it will fail.
3. Change the battery in the remote. When they start dying, the range drops significantly. To have to stand by the receiver indicates the battery is pretty much gone.
