Default What could cause this? (Steering wheel tilt working & not)

My tilt function has never worked since the car was aquired, its a 1991 LS400. The other day when my battery cable came loose, and I twisted it back on, all of a sudden the wheel tilt function was working. It worked for about 30 mins, I kept testing it while i was driving, then it stopped again. Could it be a weak relay, that got jolted when I was reattaching the battery, are there any relays for the tilt, if so where r they located?

Thanks

there is an ECU controlling the tilt wheel, seats, and mirror positions based on the memory presets. typically the problem is the motor itself on the tilt wheel. check the FAQ for repair instructions. did the tilt AND telescoping work for that 30mins?

i ran into the same issue, mine worked since i purchased the car (93 ls400). then all of a sudden when i started having mechanical issues, suddenly the steering wheel wont drop. it telescopes, but wont drop. i can hear the motor, no grinding, or no issues, just acts like its hit a limit switch.

There is a known issue and documented fix for the steering wheel. It's an easy job where you basically shim the little gear with a piece of plastic. It's probably linked on these forums.

the gears are fine

They might be but if it's not centered under the screw, it won't turn.

First off, though, do you hear the motor attempting to bring the steering wheel up or down? You said it stopped working but don't mention whether you still hear the motor.

Mine was just the opposite. After no power (once changing battery, once changing alternator) my tilt stopped working for a short time and both times came back. Telescope, seats, and mirrors were not effected.
