1995 Lexus LS400 205k. Worth looking at closely?

If it is that killer of a deal we can make it work. It isn't out of our budget, just more then we were planning on spending based on what we had been looking at. Anything more would be out of our budget. We have a budget of up to $10k for car + taxes and tags. Would probably have to offer $9k. In addition to that we have $1k set aside for initial repairs and miscellaneous.

So I can't get any of the mechanics I use to go take a look at the car for liability reasons and the guy won't let it leave his shop (he owns a landscaping company and it's at his place of business). Too much money to spend on a car that is unknown.
Thanks for the tip! I saw others mention this so I have been doing this already.
Not sure if an LS 400 is in our future. The wife wants to stay at $7k out the door and I want to get into the Gen 2.5. I know it is certainly possible but we are on more of a time crunch since we are currently down to one car. Haven't seen anything good at all in the $7k range. Preferably we are looking for something closer to 100k than 150k.

1998 137K for $6700 OTD @ very well respected local dealership
Has dual heated seats, too, which is a plus living in Colorado!
Lexus service history up until 2007, owner must've used a independent mechanic after that. Looks very very clean from photos, need to verify in person. Cashmere Beige.

That last 98 was a bust. In really bad need of a full tune-up at minimum if not worse. Did not run right at all. Some major fuel-air, spark, or other such problem caused a very ragged sputtering at idle primarily but also some when accelerating. It felt almost like when a carburetor needs adjusting. They still have it, though, and they were prepared to take $6700 with car, dealer fees, and state taxes; so I might reconsider based on them agreeing to me having it looked art by my mechanic (on the other side of Denver).
The 98-00 LS pool has dried up some but there is still one at a lot that they've had for two months or more. 98 with 123k. Priced $8850 but I should have a lot of leverage.

Lexus Test Driver
A well cared for 95 Ls 400 is getting hard to find. I had a 90 for 8 years that lasted me 300k miles and in the summer of 08 I had to get rid of it cause everything was breaking on it and it had had it. I was out of the Lexus loop 5 years when I decided I wanted to play the Ls 400 game again. I live in south Florida and they are still common as dirt here but good luck finding one in even somewhat respectable condition. Took me 3 months 35 test drives and driving 200 miles away to find the right one, but if you're willing to wait till you find one that isn't trashed, there still awesome cars. I honestly think that for the money, the Ls 400 is as good as it gets hands down, I ended up finding a really clean 95 with 160k on it for 4800 at some bull**** car lot, but it's dealer maintained and one previous owner. It still has the powerful v8, shines like a diamond, and is Rock solid reliable. Just keep in mind that a 95 is pushing 20 years old, and can have a witches brew of nasty problems if you pick the wrong one. Good luck on you're hunt!
