Default Cracking Noise When Braking

So I had the rotors turned on my 96 LS400 because the left front one was making a whistling noise when coming to a stop or when lightly pressing the brake pedal, but now its making a cracking sound when braking at those speeds or stopping. Fyi, according to the tech the pads were fine, so just had the front rotors turned. Anyone had similar experience, thanks.

Mine does this too, but only for the first 2 times i hit the brake when I just started driving my car. Still sound like strut bar bushings PD?

if it makes the noise when you're stopped, and your front brakes have the right shims and grease then it is highly likely. also a good idea to check all other front suspension bushings/ball joints at the same time.

Thanks for the insight. Anything that would jump out at me when I check?

Scaritto,

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I'm also having the same issues with my '95 LS400. My brakes make noises when I'm pressing on the brakes while I'm stopped or coming to a stop - this leads me to believe that it's not suspension related.

I'm about to swap out my brakes and rotors this coming weekend, not because if this noise but rather because my rotors need to be changed out.

I'm thinking about the shims and how they play a role in this. Perhaps grease the shims up before I apply them to the pads?

Actually i've had this problem too. After changing to Supra TT brakes i have had a whistle sound, like grasshoppers. And today i had this cracking noise and i found out that the calipers was not fastened enough. So i got them tightened good and now there is no cracking noise. Still have the grasshopper sound :-( Dont know if its the wheel bearing or what. im getting insane!!

It's not the strut rod bushings. I just replaced mine and when they went bad. It would only shake when stopping, no noise though.

my strut rods are dead again (3rd set over 2 cars) and im getting the characteristic creaking/groaning when the brakes are pressed, even when standing still. not sure about the whistling you guys are talking about.

I had that on problem on my LS 4 piston calipers even with brand new adus strut rod bushings. They were replaced with 94 LS dual piston sliders and rotors and havent had the problem since. I tried greasing everything on those calipers with no luck. I am probably going to rebuild them when I have a chance to see if it persists.

hmm well i'll be replacing my adus bushings for some OEM rubber bushings when i do my front-end rebuild in a month or two, i'll see if the creaking stops then.

I did some research on this..

Found out that my supra calipers is missing something called "pad spacers". They sit on the pad so the pads dont move inside the caliper and makes cracking noises.

You can see them here one the exploded view picture if you scroll down the page.

http://planetsoarer.com/suprabrakesI...akeUpgrade.htm

Actually the guy making this guide dont mention the pad spacers so i think i forgot to install them. Also in the guide on lextreme.com i cant see them, so maybe alot of guys dont know about the problem.

I will be ordering them asap and get them installed.

As for the tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk grasshopper sound i read this on the EBC page:

"NOISE - Light whistling/squeaking (at walking pace)
This noise usually happens as the vehicle is coming to rest and is again typical of a pad that is just bedding in or has been under used. Again the remedy is to allow a few hundred miles for the pads to properly seat and have 100% contact surface against the disc. If the problem occurs intermittently, one good cure is to use the brake severely every day now and again on a safe secluded low traffic piece of road to “de-glaze” the surface of the brake pad. Obviously extreme caution must be used when performing this action".

So i guess im going braking alot harder and use the brakes more aggressive when i get the pad spacers installed.
