Speedometer shows wrong speed
This 95 LS400 developed the sticking speedometer needle problems a few years back. Had a rebuilt speedometer installed and that was ok for a while. Lately it need a tap on the dash top to free the sticking needle. So we are good dealing with that. However a week ago I noticed the speedometer did not seem to be showing the true speed on the highway, or else everyone else actually started drive at 50 MPH. Anyway having wife drive the car and me following in other car we figured out the speedometer shows 10 mph less than the actual speed.
Anyone ever have this happen? The shop I called says it is probably a speed sensor. (what happened to speedometer cables?) If that is true, is that cheaper than a new speedometer? Is that a probable cause?
Thanks for any info on this topic.

sounds like it could be the problem. and its a lot cheaper to fix than having it start to be accurate again, while you are thinking it is still slow. tickets and insurance are tough lessons to learn.

Yes, completely stock. I have not seen this problem mentioned in the forum before so trying to learn a little about it before heading in to the shop. I still like the car and prefer to keep it in good running order as opposed to getting a new vechicle. Thanks.

Well. I tried to remove the cluster, but had to take to a shop. The good news is that the repaired cluster is back from Mr Whizard and the shop will install this week. Hoping it works as designed and everyone will be happy again.

Sorry to take so long. The repaired speedometer cluster is installed and working great. Needle moves off zero like it is supposed to. AND it shows the correct speed. When I called a make sure the unit had arrive ok, Mr Whizard asked if we tapped (pounded, whatever) the top of dash to free the stuck needle. and of course that is the only solution that has worked for the past few years. He explained that a result of that treatment can be that the needle comes loose on the shaft slightly which is why it was showing the wrong speed. AND he must be correct because it is working fine now. I was thinking no one else ever had this problem but me. Anyway it completely solved my problem, and he guarantees the work.
One side note, my credit card shows a "foreign transaction fee" of about 8 dollars, as the transaction apparently took place in Canada. Unit was mailed to ND. No matter, just wanted to mention it. I am happy with the results. So Thanks to Mr Whizard for fixing this. AND wish I had really known about this a few years ago when my mechanic replaced the original speedometer (with sticking needle) with a used unit that developed the same problem within a year. Oh well, too soon old, too late smart.
And thanks to Blaggs in Grapevine for removing and re installing the cluster. They were very helpfull also.
