Default Air conditioner squeal sound

Just got a 99 LS with 99k miles but the AC makes a squealing noise from compressor when turned on. Cools great. Is the clutch going or the whole unit?

Probably neither.... check the tension on your drive belt. If it hasn't been replaced, get a new one (not from a parts house) and put it on.

Could be the bearing on the compressor itself. Would check the idler first as etex suggested though.

It only makes the noise when the compressor engages. Would that make the tensioner bearing squeal? It sounds normal with no AC on.

It's not the tensioner bearing, but the drive belt that's squealing.

I will give that a try. Thanks.
Oh, the rpm drops about 50 - 100 when I turn the air on if that makes a diff. It stays lower & doesn't jump back up to normal after a few seconds.

If etex solution does not fix your problem try some BG Frigiquiet II if you determine the squeal to be emanating from the compressor itself.

It may turn out to be a cheap solution to your problem. Hard to find though!
