Default Noise, Smell, Smoke

I'ts hard to explain, but here goes. 92 ls 400 top front of engine drivers side, right in front of the valve cover there is a small plastic cover over what i think is one of the dist. smells and feels like a belt is coming apart. does the timing belt come through there? Is it a easy fix?. my kid was driving the car and said the car seemed to lose power and shut it off right away, it starts right up but seems to idle rough. any help would be appreciated, thanks. Bill

yes that is your timing belt and ignition coil under that cover......remove it and check your belt for cracks and missing teeth.....one of your spark plug wires could have melted maybe?

here is a tutorial on how to replace...hope it is ok to post the link http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html
