Default Gear not catching when car is cold

am facing a problem with my LS400 2000 model.
when car is cold and while shifting gear from "P" to "D"
the gear does not catch , it take like 20 seconds to catch the gear and move, it accelerate only without moving the car, while if i put gear on "R" it catch without any problems and moves fine.
BTW I had already checked the transmission fluid level and recently changed it, but i did not changed the trans. filter.

How could i diagnose this. any input will be great help for me.
