I have the same 93 LS and beleive me they are bullet proof. I've never heard of the gasket going on these cars. The last reply is correct concerning the idle control valve but this would normally only show a lot of smoke at startup. It's an easy fix.

Is the smoke only on start-up or does it always smoke no matter what?
Head gaskets going out on the 1UZ are VERY VERY VERY rare. I'd say nearly unheard of.
The 1UZ and tranny are bullet-proof. Just keep up maintenance and replace your fluids with synthetics. I'd recommend Amsoil or Mobil1. Mobil1 is a lot more easily accessible.
Good luck on your purchase and welcome to the forums!
Don't forget to checkout www.lexusownersclub.com as well. Between these two site you'll learn more than you'll ever need to know!

Other than the tranny only needing Toyota ATF Type T-IV I've personally never really seen or heard of many problems.
Just maintain them right and they'll last you for years to come.

Don't replace it, repair it. The instructions are at the top of the LS400 in a sticky called "The Power Steering Bible." I repaired mine according to the write-up and it works perfect. Just like Melissa says, it's easy.

For those of you who choose to replace the Idle control valve on the power steering pump, it is a DEALER part only(as far as I have ever seen) and cost in the neighborhood of $125.
