Stereo questions 1999 LS 400
How do you tell if you have the Nakamichi system? Also, looking to do some upgrades to the deck/subwoofers, any results people are proud of they can share? Hoping to avoid custom boxes, maybe replace factory sub/amps, etc.

I added an amp and sub to the trunk and removed the stock sub. Sounds great with the remainder of the Nak stuff. I also have a 99. At first I had a big sub box but didn't like how much of the trunk room it ate up. Now I have an Infinity 12" sub in a sealed box that fits into the corner next to the tool box. Plenty of trunk room and great bass.
I have read of others on the board buying free air subs and mounting them to the rear deck. Not sure how great that sounds though.

Here's a picture of a Nakamichi from a GS of the same era (I think the LS HUs will be similar, my 98 LS had Nav so I'm not certain) showing the Nak logo. If it says premium, you've got the (standard) Pioneer system.

That pic is pretty much how my Nak deck looked like in my 99LS. It clearly should say Nakamichi in the upper right corner just as pictured above.
As for Free Air is should/could sound really good. It is just a matter of how sealed off the back wave is from the front of the speaker. In the case of the LS, being that the truck is pretty sealed off from the cabin due to the firewall like brace behind the rear seat, a Free Air sub generally works really well. At least when the trunk is closed
