The gen 1 and the later generation LS400s are quite small compared to a Lincoln Town Car. We offered our 90 LS to our 6' 5" 240 pound football playing nephew and it was far too small for him.

How he ever drove my wife's 86 Honda Accord for the previous 5 years is a mystery to us. He had the seat back of the Honda reclined so much that it almost hit the back seat cushion.

His father bought him a 96 Lincoln Towncar and it had far more room and fit him just right.

The 95-up LS400 are quite a bit roomier than the 90-94 LS but still don't have nearly the driver space as a Town Car has.

I'm sorry about this but this post finally made a lurker who has been doing research on a possible LS400 purchase this weekend post.

Have you ever owned a 1990-1997 Town Car? If you haven't hten you can't comment because I owned a 1995 Town Car that from through the following:

Brother's car...originally for chauffeur service
Bought a business and had a driver for him do it
then was his personal vehichle up to 2000
then i took it over and sold it in 2004.

Guess what?

I sold it with 342,500 miles on the original MOTOR and REAR END. Car went through one 1 transmission during that time. Regular maintenance was performed and everything worked in the car to the day i sold it.

Their ride quality is trash? They all came with factory air suspension that is probably the nicest ride i have ever been in ever. Now the body roll wasn't very good but it wasn't designed for that. Oh and even that was only replaced ONCE.

The 4.6l ford motor is probably the next most reliable engine next to the LS400 imo and i have friends who have owned extremely high mileage ones as well with great success.

Thanks

The LS is a small car in comparison to the TC. Those have cavernous trunks...wha...maybe around 20+ cuft or so. There is enough room to seat 4 wide in the back in reasonable comfort even for long trips. 3 up front on the bench seat...not many makers could claim a 7 passenger sedan.

There are good samples out there and while American cars have taken a beating, the TC in good hands can be long term drivers. I have a friend who's taken his from one end of the country and back many times and he loves it. He doesn't like the FWD so he still has his '91 or '92.

Of course, YMMV.

There's a reason that almost all NYC cabs are Crown Vics, which share the "Panther" platform with the Town Cars. They take a beating and keep on rolling. Ridiculously high-mileage cars are not uncommon.

I was near a backfire from a NY taxicab today for the first time, sounded like a god damned bomb went off...

Anything can be reliable, if properly maintained.

I guess its all a matter of perspective, I'm 6'5" around 260 and I fit great in the front of my 90 LS400. Sitting in the rear is cramped if the front seats are back. But the front is great.

I too found it slightly small in the interior for it's exterior size, but i've also seen some deceptibly roomy cars in small packages.

I just figure it must be all that soundproofing.

My father in law gave up is TC for his Lexus GS - The TC was certainly larger in every category especially trunk, headroom, etc. Now he numerous problems with his air suspension but the other aspects of the car were fine. Not all TC's are crap that is for sure.
