Default Tachometer woes....... ('91)

Unfortunately, my 1991 LS400 was "curbed" over the weekend. Good news is, no apparent cosmetic damage, and after a new tire, balance and alignment, camber and such seem to be just fine. One small problem though, after impact, the tachometer no longer reads correctly. At first I though it wasn't working at all, with the needle just sitting at its lowest position. I then noticed that in the higher rpm's, i.e. after a downshift, the needle does move and appears to be fuctioning correctly, just at about 4000 rpm's lower on the dial......the needle begins to read and move correctly it just moves between 0 and 1500, when it should be around 4500. I don't have an understanding of how the tachometer works, so im at a loss. Every other gauge in the cluster is fine, so i hope its not that, but i can't find the connection between the curbing and the tach problem. Any light at all would be greatly appreciated.

Default RE:Tachometer woes

I have the same problem with my 1990 LS400 plus my speedometer stopped working. After researching this site it looks like I'll need to replace or repair the instrument cluster. Any other suggestions would help!

check out this cluster on ebay. Due to the price it might be worth the risk.

My tach does the exact same thing, plus the needle doesn't completely light up, plus my odometer stopped working. I bought another odometer as well as tach needle from a junk yard. We'll see if they work.

i don't see the point of buying another instrument cluster when the problem may just be a dirty sensor or something small.. does noone know where the tach sensor is in the hood? does anyone have a parts index guide manual diagram in a pdf format?

Over the last 3 months I owned my LS400, I noticed the tach started to read low... lower and lower, especially if it was cold out.

I sold it... hopefully the new owner can figure it out. It lit up fine... in fact, my entire instrument cluster did.

Maybe the jolt jiggled the connector and you need to remove instrument cluster and spray some contact cleaner in the connectors and plug it back in. see if that helps. Also the jolt may have damaged something inside the instrument cluster (a bad solder on the board or something)
