Default Help!!!! [sound with car in neutral]

Hey all,
Have a 2008 Lexus is250. 37k miles. When I got home today from a long drive to and from work (120 miles), I noticed a loud sound almost a banging sound when my car was in neutral. It's a manual model. Had my neighbor and brother in law listen to the car. They both said the water pump was bad. I have ZERO warning lights on in my dash. Car has not overheated etc. Heater does take some time to warm the car. Question, I have to go to and from work tomorrow (120 miles), before being off for the holidays. Is it safe to drive with no warning lights on? Have an appt with my mechanic for Friday. Thanks so much!

Can you narrow down where the sound is coming from? With the vehicle running, can you hear something a slight grinding or bearing "whirring" noise? With the engine off, check under the water pump area for pink crust (aka, leaking coolant).

Are you sure it wasn't the clutch/pressure plate when shifting out of gear into neutral?

It is more of a knocking sound I guess. No pink or leaking anything for that matter. We left it running a good 10-15 mins and the sound continued Seems to be driving just fine.

Does it sound like it is coming from the front area of the motor or the driver side OR behind the motor? Does the vehicle shift fine with both the car off AND on?

It seems to be more towards the drivers side or middle of the motor. I haven't tried shifting with the car off. Shifted fine while driving. My brother in law also said he felt that something was loose? Just worried about my commute tomorrow before getting it into the shop.

my water pump symptons were a clanking noise from my engine bay and my car not heating up. this was during the winter. my car overheated about 30 mins into a trip to savannah. had to get towed back to a shop.

Remove all of the engine covers you can and then check for the noise. You should be able to narrow it down that way.

For a 120 miles commute, I would not take it for tomorrow work. I rather do a car rental just to be safe that you won't be strained on the road, and to further damage any internal part.

Just my two cent.
