does anyone know why when my cars air conditioning first starts up it smells like an anchovies **** slapped me in the face??

my 40k tune up is coming up soon and im obviously going to ask them about it, but before that comes up in a month or so, I was wondering if there is something i can do about it? its summer and im big on AC!

thank you!

concerned anchovy enthusiast,

Try turning the A/C off a few minutes before you shut off your car.

does it smell with the recir on or off? If it is on then you need to replace the in-cabin filter. If off you are screwed! JUST KIDDING... It is coming from the outside vents clean them out and you should be ok. The vents are the ones near the windshield wiper blades.

E you beat me again on posting

Do you do what E said? A\C cause condensation build up if you dont clear it out before you turn it off in the sun. That is where the smell is coming from.

weird. mine smells a little too when I shut off the car while the AC is on and then when I start backup. It goes away a few seconds afterwards.

You got it. It should matter if the recirc is on or not. If you do want to wait too long I would park then turn the fan on high for about 30 secs. I usually do this about 1/4 mile from my destination.

I believe the problem is from mildew/mold in the airbox as a result of condensation. My SC once had so bad that I swore I was allergic to the car.

I now periodically spary vent cleaner (Lysol might do it to )into the system from both the passenger compartment and the engine compartment. And when I change the cabin filter I will spray as far into that compartment as I can

A few miles before arriving to your destination:
Switch it to outside air
Turn off AC - but set the blower on high or a notch below.
Switch the air flow to upper body and feet
Let it run full blast to dry it out

Remember to do this every time to keep mold/mildew out.
