Default IS350 Paddle Shifting Quirk

If I set the trans to operate in S Mode and I give the throttle 100% and attempt to short shift at say 6,000RPM, the transmission fails to upshift until the engine gets to redline.

However, if I do the same test but I keep the throttle at say 50%, it upshifts exactly when I request it with the paddle shifter.

Is this normal? Is there a way to disable this function?

I want the trans to upshift as per my request only, like an Audi Tiptronic or BMW SMG.

Thanks!
JP

Noticed the same thing. I ended up bouncing the rev limiter a few times. Pisses me off everytime. I hate that feeling like its running out of gas or the fuel pump is failing.

Now i hit the paddle around 5000 so it shifts just before the red line or usually right on it. Only short shift it if going from first to second for obvious reasons.

That's because your paddle shifter are not true paddle shifters. They are "top range gear selectors." The only control you have over the transmission is the maximum gear the car is allowed to shift into. In other words, if you paddle up to 4th, then you are in essence giving the automatic transmission permission to select any gear up to 4th. The Tiptronic or DSG functionality you guys are looking for is simply not possible in this car.

Welcome to the worst thing about the IS: those idiotically useless paddle shifters.

The best way to deal with it is just to click down into 1st gear whenever you shift into S (hopefully at low speeds ) and just flick up as you near the redline. That gives you pretty much the most amount of control over the gear changes in the IS.

Well it will be a whole different deal in the IS-F, but for now, just turn the ECT button to PWR and drive like that.

Wow. There are a lot of new members on this thread...

The paddle shifters are more of a gimmick than anything else (like the wind noise reducing sun visor, and the such). It's nice to have, but it's not as functional as what most would desire.

Philip and Javy said it best. They are there for looks. I only use them if I am on a windy road to hold the gear.

I didn't think I'd ever find use for the paddles until I drove this weekend up the mountain to Ridge Vineyards in Cupertino. Anybody who's ever done that drive can attest it is one really scary drive, with really narrow roads for 2 way traffic, and minimal mirrors to see oncoming cars.

The paddle shifters worked well to keep the car in a lower gear, though that run killed my gas mileage. On flat grounds, the shifters are pointless.

I use mine in the city traffic all the time to limit the top gear and downshift instead of braking.
