Bumping an old thread.
My AC is very intermittent, probably 90/10 not working/working. Took the car to a local shop yesterday. They diagnosed the driver side blowing 40 something degrees and passenger side blowing 80 something with the system at low. (Which I never noticed myself. I noticed the system either 100% working or 100% not working). They said they added r134a and both sides worked as normal. Picked the car up and while sitting at the nearest light to make my way out of the complex, my engine RPM's dropped and the AC disengaged. On the drive home, there were several times that it appeared the AC was trying to turn itself on as the exhaust perked up along with the RPM's for only a second here and there.
The vehicle is doing the same today, it's a mix of hot and cold.
I ran through the above suggested diagnostics. The indicator check was performed and then the sensor check automatically performed after. Displayed a 00, meaning everything is performing as it should. I then pressed the recirculation/fresh button to enter the actuator check. I'm not sure what the air mix damper and cool air bypass damper do, but all the vents and levels of air coming out of the vents appeared to work as tested. I pushed the temp up button to step through each step manually. At this point the AC stopped working and was blowing hot air through each step. I pushed Auto to get back to the sensor check mode and it displayed 00 again. At this point I turned the car off and immediately repeated the steps. The AC was ice cold. I'm perplexed.
On top of all of this, this is my 3rd Lexus and I will say that this car's AC has never performed like I'm used to, mostly with the volume of air that is coming through the vents. In my previous Lexus', I used to be able to give myself the chills and if I had the vents positioned on my neck, could damn near give myself a brain freeze. lol. Something's amiss. Thoughts?
The shop that topped of the refrigerant would like the car back tomorrow to further investigate.
Also, might be of importance. The car is an '08 with 117,xxx miles.

I have over 150k on mine and have only topped off the refrigerant once myself. Hopefully the shop you are working with knows this A/C system uses a variable displacement compressor and does not have a clutch at all. No DTCs also complicates things. Your initial description made me think you have a problem with one or more dampers. There should never be a disparity in temperature if the driver and passenger controls are set the same (or dual mode is disabled). That difference is controlled by the dampers. There are other possibilities, but they quickly get into the very odd and unusual and are best troubleshot in person, not over the web.

I had a funny feeling this was the problem. There is an over/under pressure switch in the system to prevent damage to the compressor should the system be overcharged or empty. It shuts down the compressor, but unlike an old school system with a magnetic clutch, it can only minimize the compressor's activity. There is no clutch in our A/C system because they've used a variable displacement compressor. This is true of almost all Lexus vehicles now.

Problem with my a/c now...not blowing as cold and not blowing as hard. It's 102 outside now but when i used to set my A/C to 69 temp on HI it would get so cold that I needed to shut it off....now it's on LO and on HI and it's barley cool in the car and not blowing as hard. Thoughts?

Low on charge. All A/C systems leak a little. Over time, they lose enough to lose efficiency. Have it topped off and all will be well again. I have done this many times.

It's not the greatest idea to DIY if you are not familiar with refrigeration systems. Way better off taking it to a shop and having it done right.
