Default Can you update your steering: 2012 steering ecu vs pre-12 steering ecu pcb board?

Just wondering if anyone has opened up their steering ecu's to take a look at the circuit board to compare the pre and post 12 units?

Just thinking that the pcb is probably identical and maybe the only changes are a few small components of some eproms.

I'm not that familiar with steering ecu's, but in the past we used to have a guy we knew who copied eproms to update older pcb boards for a certain industry.

If anyone has done a steering ecu swap and has pics of the pcb boards that would be helpful to the community

What are you trying to achieve, here? If you're considering a possible upgrade to the unit for better feel, see below.

If you're trying to spot and implement the differences, then I can't say I've seen anything on that.

Often times the two steering ecus could be 99 percent the same. Maybe a resistor would is different or the programming on a eprom is different. If it was just a difference in eproms, then you don't need to buy a whole new ecu. You just reprogram a eprom and stick it in your old ecu. So something that might cost let say $600, now cost $60 to implement.

Thanks for the links. I read those before posting this thread, but it's still greatly appreciated.

Toyota is notorious for using fusible links on their software to ensure it is difficult or impossible to download their code. I'm not sure if they do this on the steering ECU, but I know for fact they do this on the ECM.

Nothing is socketed, so you'll be reflowing whatever they've used if this can be done. Unfortunately, the big ticket item is not the ECU, but the updated steering rack.
