Default Rear axle lateral play?

Like many others I am getting some noise from a rear axle, the passenger side in my case. As you can see in the video I am getting quite a bit of lateral play. The axle nut seems to have the original punch mark indicating that it has not moved. Any ideas?

I killed some time today reviewing the axle noise thread. I'd start there.

Do you by chance run non-oem wheels?

I've read through that thread in the past. I am running aftermarket wheels, but the noise existed before the aftermarket wheels were installed.

Some lateral play is normal due to the fact that as the suspension moves the distance between the wheel and differential carrier changes and the axle has to be able to adjust to those changes.

The rust could be an indicator that the splines need to be greased. I have an 08 with less then 50k miles and am having the same issue. I ordered 2 new axle nuts and will be greasing both splines. Never noticed the sound until I got my PSS tires.

Is it normal for the passenger side to have more lateral travel than the driver side?

I think I might try the same thing considering it is a cheap way to eliminate one potential cause of the sound.

Can the splines be greased by just removing axle nut and sliding the axle towards the differential or does everything have to come loose?
