Wow. I think an unnecessary and complicated design with a motor that could burn out if used a lot especially if it resets itself every time your turn off the car. My X3 has analog gauges but in the very bottom of the RPM gauge it becomes electronic so in effect, a major part of the gauge is analog and the bottom part of that same gauge is an electronic display. I'd prefer an electronic display. I'm sure it will eventually be redesigned.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not complicated at all (simple motor and a few gears) and it's been out for over 3 years and I'm yet to hear of any issues with it. Electric motors in power windows, mirrors, etc. are not failing, so I don't see how this simple design would be worse.

I wouldn't worry about it. People said the same thing about the electro-lumincent gauges back in the 90's, that it was going to cost $9,000 to fix them when they broke. The aftermarket has stepped up, there are now several companies that will do a refurb on your old 90's Lexus gauges for a few hundred dollars, much cheaper than buying new parts from the dealer.

Many cars are going away from the analog gauges. Digital is becoming more and more used.
Look at the new Honda Civic, the whole instrument panel is digital.
