The "diesely" sound is the direct injection, it will be loudest at startup and at idle. The loudest of it will be from the pump which I can't recall if it is or isn't under the engine cover. I can't imagine the engine covers helping too much with the noise but I suppose any extra layer should do something to reduce the noise.
My "diesely" sound is 24/7... dam... lol. Ah well, this is my first Lexus, and will have it only about 2-3 years before this next promotion, and then I'll trade it in on a '13 w/ the options that I prefer. I'll just sound deaden it like I did my last car and that should help quite a bit for now. Thanks guys, you're very helpful here. Much better than the Subaru though lol.
I noticed that the 3rd Gen IS and the newer ES are so much quieter regarding outside noise than my 2nd Gen IS when driving. Not sure if the newer cars have more or better sound deadening material installed from the factory compared to the older ones.
