If the alternator is going bad, another symptom is a smell resembling electrical burning, for lack of better words.

think i smelled something funny on saturday when we were testing it...
also the car has 112,xxx miles and the alternator hasn't been replaced so I'm assuming thats proper timing to replace it too?

It varies quite a bit. A friend had to replace his 350 around the 60k mark, I replaced mine at around 120k.

does anyone know what i should do about the obd2 not communicating with the ECU?
I've tried 3 different obd2 with all having the same outcome and not being able to communicate.

take it to the dealer to be properly diagnosed, there is no point in throwing good money after bad trying to figure it out on your own unless you have the proper tools to do the diagnosis.
the dealer may charge $150 for the diagnostic fee but if you use them for the repair the fee is usually waived in lieu of the repair fees, if you don't want the dealer to do it, find a reputable auto electric repair center, that has an ODBII scan tool for Lexus.
