Top off engine oil if garaged?
Hi all,
I am new to this forum so please be gentle . I have not driven my IS for awhile and decided garage it. I think the engine oil is low because its been sitting there for some time. I haven't driven it. Can I just top off my engine oil instead of getting an oil change? I don't see the need to get new filters because I haven't driven the car.
Thanks!

The oil doesn't get low from just sitting there unless it is leaking out. So you probably just haven't changed it in a long time or your engine burns a lot of oil.
Change the oil and filter. For $30-$40 dollars it shouldn't even be a question.
It's not good for the engine or the car to let it sit for longer periods without getting any exercise. Drive it once a week for 20-30 minutes.

There aren't any leaks I checked. The oil level was good when I decided to garage it (haven't driven it much since my last oil change). I wish I could drive it but I am in school (2 hour drive from my house) and my car is garaged at my house. My parents are afraid to drive the car lol.

Also, depends on how long you have let it sit there for.
If it's been a while as in 8 months+, I would definitely drop the oil and put a fresh batch in before you start it.
Also, but doing this, at least you're letting some oil flow through parts of the engine when you're re-filling, rather than a dry start all-over.

Change the oil and tell your parents to start it once a week for 10 minutes or so. At least it will allow the fluids to circulate throughout the system. Put fuel stabilizer in it. It would be a really good thing if you could have them just take it around the block occasionally.
