Hmm, I'll give this a second attempt, right now, my LEDs are taped over the stock ones and disabled. It's perfectly fine but I would prefer it inside the housing. Where exactly do you cut the housing? I tried heating it up with a heat gun and using a soldering iron blade to cut it open but the plastic seems quite hard to cut.

You need to remove the interior panel(s) on the back of the tailgate itself (just held on with clips). Then you'll see the bulbs which twist in from the inside tailgate area.
The lights cannot be removed from outside of the car, only from the inside. Just pry the panels off with a flathead screwdriver. Its alot of work

The LED is integrated as part of an assembly, therefore you need to replace the assembly. Notice the part number is for the assembly, not in particular for the LED bulb.
I think CJ22 found this out and managed to replace the LED but in there but it is not that easy.

Has anyone figured out how to remove license plate light housing is250/350 gen 2
I got a housing with a backup camera and a license plate light to replace the OEM housing. The problem is I can't figure out how to remove the original OEM license plate housing. Seems like alot of people have tried. Has anyone figured out how to get this out?
There has to be a way if Lexus ever had to replace for some reason? I think the put the push tab there just to give you false hope it will be easy.
Thanks.

Same here, I got a backup camera for this but I am having trouble understanding the instructions, SO I got the liner removed and see the plugs to the housing, but I want to remove the housing in order to put the reverse camera into it, can anybody help? It wiggles around but something is holding it in place but I don't know what, I have a 2008 Lexus IS250

Hi Guys,
New to the forum here and found this post very helpful! The license plate lights on my 2006 SC430 are out (both of them) and instead of shelling out the $205+ for parts alone at my local Lexu$ dealership for the "sealed LED" unit, I went ahead and ordered the pre-2006 parts consisting of socket and wire, left bulb cover, right bulb cover, and a couple of nifty LED bulbs (total cost about $80 after taxes and shipping). Then, however, I found something really really weird...my license plate lights are currently disconnected! In fact, when I removed my rear license plate, I saw that the connector end of my current "sealed LED" license plate light setup is stuck between the Styrofoam-looking bumper inside and the bumper cover (huge outside piece), and totally reachable by sticking your hand underneath the car and reaching up behind the bumper cover (not the white Styrofoam-looking bumper itself). Not sure how I ended up in this situation but it may have been this way for years and I never noticed as I typically only drive the car during the day.
I got underneath the car and started looking for where I can plug the connector end into but did not find any "connectors to the car." From what I read in this combined thread, I must need to access the "connector to the car" another way. Does anybody have the instructions on how I can connect up the license plate lights to the car (either the "sealed LED" unit or the socket and wire for the pre-2006 model)? It looks like I must remove the inner trunk liner but I am not 100% sure and what to look for.
As always, I find it more helpful to "shut up and listen" to the experience of others before I start disassembling the rear half of the trunk. Anybody with experience on this particular issue concerning the SC430 model?
Thanks!
