Default Upgrade Navigation DVD from 5.1 to 8.1

The service tech at a local dealership says I need to recalibrate my nav if I upgrade from 5.1 to 8.1 (costs an addl $50). It's not as simple as ejecting the old dvd and inserting the new.

Is this true or are they just wanting more money for this?

Short answer: no. If you have an early enough version of the 5.1, there is a known problem with using too few satellites that the newer version fixed.

Long answer: See if they will show you official documentation to verify (a) the requirement for this to be done and (b) the process by which they will do it. There are menus in the diagnostic/technician area where you can do things like this if you need to, but I've never heard of a requirement to do it just because you upgraded the DVD.

I know for sure that if you go from v5.1 to v7.1 it as simple as ejecting the old DVD and inserting the new one.... wait a couple minutes and it is done. I suspect that going to v8.1 is pretty much the same.

You don't need to recalibrate anything. It is as simple as removing the clock face, ejecting the old disc and inserting the new one.

I just went from 5.1 to 8.1. Here are the steps:

1. Use stupid clock removal tools to remove clock.
2. Keep trying to remove stupid clock.
3. Finally after clock is removed, hit eject nav DVD on nav screen.
4. Remove old nav disc.
5. Put new 8.1 disc in and wait for it to load.
6. Done.

the $50 would cover the 30minutes of labor of removing the clock face

Thanks guys.

VikH, did you buy the 8.1 maps from the dealership? My local dealership is charging $265 for the maps....is there someplace else I can get a better deal?

No need to recalibrate. If you do, you can do it yourself in the Nav Menu.

That's like charging $50 to turn on your radio if they change the CD player...
