Default Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors - Generic?

Are the sensors on our IS' specific to "Lexus" or can another brand/type be used on the winter rubbers? I was quoted $150 per sensor today by Lexus($600 total) in addition to the $800 for my winter rubber and the $275 to put the rubber on the rim, callibrate the sensors and balance the tires.

$1,675 + tax.

CRAZY MONEY!

Thanks

I think they are not generic.
There are 2 components to TPMS (Tire Pres monitoring System): the transmitter and receiver. Both are Lexus' factory installed in our 2IS with propietary frequency and signals. I think it will be difficult to use generic or aftermarket transmitter since the receiver is integrated "somewhere" in the car computer system.

An idea:
Can we just disable the TPMS system on the winter months?
I.e just dont use it when the IS wears its winter wheels+tires.
Then activate it back when you install the summer wheels with the factory TPSM sensor on it?

I saw two auctions on ebay for Lexus genuine TPMS, but for the ES and RX. I'm not sure if they are the same for all Lexus vehicles or not. Does anybody know?

Thanks alot for the info!

Do you know if the sensors for all tire set-ups are the same? For example, is there just one type of sensor for all tires that can be put on the IS350? Summer set AND winter set?

Thanks again.

The sensors don't have anything to do with the tires. They mount on the inside of the wheels. Some wheels are compatible, and some aren't.

My understanding is there are just so many sensor transmitters that can be programmed into the TSMS computer. I'm not sure how many is the limit.

Meaning, will two sets of four sensors work with the vehicle? (One set for summer and one set for winter.)

Yes, you can have 2 sets programmed into the car.
