To be honest, people are that 'lazy' (not a criticism towards anyone who does this). Next to keeping their tires properly inflated, many idividuals just hate the 'tedious' task of getting their oil changed. I personally would welcome 15k mile changes though, simply because its less maintanence (in tandem with why I bought a lexus).

While the car is under warranty, you don't draw the line, the car manufacturer does. If you have a major failure and can't produce receipts to show compliance with the published maintenance schedule, you could be out of luck. That fact that an American has complied with the UK schedule just isn't going to cut it.

Sorry, you've missed my point. Of course if the maintenance schedule says 5k intervals then you must comply to maintain your warranty. I was merely questioning why two identical cars can have two different maintenance intervals. Same car, same oil, same filter. What's going on? I believe it's a con to get people to pay for double the number of oil changes required, and it's helped by the deeply entrenched 5k oil change culture.

TBH I was amazed when I bought my Lexus that the oil changes were as frequent as 10k intervals and asked the salesman to check it. Most cars now are working on 15-20k oil change intervals in Europe now.

At the end of the day a person is entitled to change their oil as often as they like but it does seem a terrible waste of resources - hopefully they recycle the oil at a recognised centre.

lot of engines are running much cleaner, oils are keeping its lubricating properties over longer mileage/time, 3000 mile oil changes are a thing of the past.

I dont believe in synthetic oil. I like "junk oil" and probably doesnt hurt to do oil change at 1K mile.

obviously it doesnt hurt the car but its gonna hurt the wallet + time and materials changing the oil, theres a fine balance b/t mainainence intervals and material cost and downtime doing it. Do it too early youre just wasting still perfectly good oil

Agreed. I have a feeling that if Lexus were to offer a no cost maintenance plan like BMW does here, that you'd see that interval stretched to 7,500 miles, if not more.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but I completely disagree. When I'm using dino oil, it's still 3000-3500 miles between changes for me. When I'm using syn, it's 7500.
