ML Audio: Surround Mode?
HI all, just picked up my IS w/Nav + ML. I have a few DVD-A discs that I have been listening too and there is one question I have. When a DVD-A disc is being played, does the player always read the 6CH track regardless if Surround mode is off? I know if I had a test DVD I could verify this, but I was hoping someone knew the answer this this one while I look for a test disc.
I still can't decide if having Surround mode on sounds better than with it off. I wish there was a way to display which audio track was being played at any given time.

I have not fully figured this out yet, so this answer might be dead wrong. (It does not help that there is not really a standardized content for DVD-A discs--i.e., some have a high-rez 2-channel track, some do not, etc.) But I think that the track the player reads depends on the audio setting you choose from the DVD's own menu, which you can access through the Nav screen when the car is in P with parking brake on.
I'm still not fully sure how this plays out if, for example, you choose the DVD's 2-channel track but you have ML surround on. In that case, it appears that the player reads the 2-channel track and gives you synthesized surround.
Anyway, to make sure you are listening to the 6-channel track, the best bet is to go through the DVD menu and make sure that track is selected.

Thanks for your input. I too am still in the learning stages. I will try your suggestion and see what I can find out. I am still getting used to the sound that is produced. Sometimes I really like it and other times it make me wonder.

With the car in park and the disc loaded tap the screen and in the upper left it should show the surround mode your in. And yes the best way to ensure that you're in surround mode is to select it from the disc menu.
