Default E-shifting

I have an IS loaner today and I love it, but I have a question. Does the E-Shift get down to 1st gear? If so, how? My GS does not have E-shift and the Touchshift on my Benz will let you get to first gear.

Thanks for your comments.

That is not entirely accurate. Yes, the E-Shift selector will not go below 2 which makes it look like 2nd is the lowest gear. However, the E-Shift selected value on the IS300 does not equal the actual gear you are in. Instead, E-Shift keeps the transmission at or below the selected value. For example, put E-Shift in 5 and you can still start from a dead stop. In fact, you will hear the transmission shift from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5. Thus, when you have E-Shift on 2, that means that the car will not shift above 2nd gear until you shift up, but it will start in 1st and shift to 2nd automatically. This means that E-Shift is great for performance revving and engine braking, but it is not an exact shifting mechanism.
From what I understand, Lexus made 2 the smallest E-Shift number because the shift from first to second gear is so fast that many people would over-rev the engine. Also, on slippery surfaces the transmission may actually start in 2nd gear.

I understand your reply, as well as how E-Shift works. My question was answered by 1NewLexIS300 thought. I simply wanted to know if I could manually control the shift from 1st to 2nd gear in E-Shift.

I am sure however that if I wanted to remain in 1st gear, I could shift through the gate to get to L and leave it there until I decided to work my way through the gate.

Other than the E-Shift not going into first gear and a few other small points about the car, it is perfect. I really enjoyed driving it!

Man,

I'd love an IS! The only problem is...well, my wife and I are both about six feet and we have a 3 year old son. When we sit him in the back seat of the GS, we have to let the seat up so that he won't kick it. It is pretty much the same way in the E430.

The other day, he rode in the IS with me and I had to let the seat up to the point that it would not have been comfortable for me to ride in the passenger seat.

But, that hasn't stopped me from trying though. If only I could convince her...

If I did get one, it would have the charcoal/black interior and either the white or that (mustard) gold exterior.

I like the E55, but I'm not ready to spend that much yet, maybe next time. Also, my wife drives the Benz most of the time anyway so it's no major loss to me.

Enjoy your IS!
