this is a common problem on older lexus keys. the newer cases are much more durable.
i had the same problem as you did, i bought a blank key/shell from ebay. then swapped my transponder over and brought down to the dealership as these keys must be laser cut. as mentioned it ran about $20 i believe

I have a 05 LX470. Exact same thing happend to me. I got mine from Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=all and googled my local locksmith. My key arrived today and I took it to a local lock smith and they were able to cut my key for 15 dollars. The blade I received in teh mail was a little shorter however that didnt matter because the key part that goes inside the ignition was teh exact side. I live in michigan. He was able to cut the keys on a regular machine. I was in an out of the shop in 10 mins. The Place I went to is called. Town Locksmith Inc, 1270 S. main St, Plymouth MI 48170 ph 734-455-5440. Anyone in michigan area looking for a set of keys call them. They also carry the lexus keys, however just get it off of ebay or amazon, and take it to them and save yourself some money. I hope this helps

Please make sure that the blade of the key from eBay is not shorter than your OEM key. Here is what happened to me: I ordered the key and when it arrived in the mail, I noticed that it was abot half a kilometer shorter than my OEM key, however I got it cut and everything was good till I came home and put the key in the ignition. The key worked fine, my truck 2005 lx470 started fine until I turned the truck off and tried to take the key out of the ignition. The key got stuck and would not come out of the ignition. Reason? Well the way the mechanism works is that when your turn your key to OFF position you need to then push the key in to put it to lock position and turn the key so it will come out, since my key blade was shorter, I did not have that extra kilometer to push my key all the way in to get the key out. I had to take a nose plier and break the shell of my key and then push the blade in, turned the key to locked position and then took the key out. Please please make sure that your place is at least the size of your OEM key blade or longer, otherwise you will get stuck. Remember when you put the key in the ignition and start the car, the mechanism dies not require you to push the key in and turn. It's when you turn off your car wand want to take they key out of the ignition, that last step after you turn your key to off position and want to take the key out of the ignition that requires you to push the key further into the ignition and then turn the key counter clockwise and take it out. Good luck. Please ignore my earlier post. As I don't know how to delete my earlier post.
