Buying a 2006 Rx400h, is this a good price? Pitfalls
Hey Folks,
I am coming over to lexus after selling my maxima. I am looking at a 2006 Lexus Rx400h from Carmax and wanted to hear your opinions on the car.
Mileage 67K
Price: 22998
Fully loaded, navi, back up camera, etc,
2 owners
I was really excited about this car and set up an appt to test drive it, however looking over some boards, not sure if the car is a good one. Can you give your opinions on it?
1) Is the mileage as good as advertised? I have heard people getting from 16-22MPG instead of higher.
2) What is the inverter issues that is talked about and how expensive of a repair is it?
3) Also, I read in many boards that the car can suddenly stop while travelling on high speeds on the hwy, which parts here are the problem causing one.
Any other tidbits will help.
Thanks,
Amit

Nice ride with low mileage....As for mileage I average 23 to 25 all of the time with driving hard. I owned a previous RX300 and the increase in mpg was fantastic. The inverter on that vehicle may have been recalled, run the vin and see if it was covered..The stopping at highway speeds was due to inverter failures, but Lexus recalled all RX400h's that fell in that category. My 2008 didnt. Buy the way I bought mine at Carmax also, very satisfied and spent $6k less than what the dealer was offering on a 2007. I believe you would be very satisfied with the vehicle, but do remember it is 7 years old...As for maintenance it is not due for timing belt until 100k miles...I personally changed the tranny fluid which uses only Toyota WS fluid...Only other issues are wheel bearings. Many have had no problem, I had to change 1....It is a totally nice vehicle for long trips and when everything is right is quiet, and solid....The small battery (ignition computer battery) has failed on many, but putting in Aftermarket is generally better, (Costco or Sams) The OEM battery seems to have been poor. Good luck....

Thank you Thomas for such a detailed reply.
How do I run the Vin # to see if it was indeed a vehicle that needed the repairs and how do I make sure that the repairs were done on the car.
Thanks,

Easy, register on this site and then enter vin#...It will also give you a repair history if done at Lexus. There is a place on site to look for recalls.

I just purchased an 06 myself with 53.86k miles, ML audio, rear-seat ent, heated front seats, navi, etc. 2-owner, clean carfax, no accidents, robust maint history.
I think you should be able to do better than the $23k asking price. Look at other vehicles on autotrader, ebay, cars.com, etc. and show the dealer that you are considering other options and perhaps you can move the price point in your favor.
Good luck with the decision.
