When taking the valve cap off the valve stem, it was on so tight it snapped off the tip of the valve. The valve core is still intact and the tire is still holding pressure. My question is, is there a kit to replace the tip of the valve stem/TMPS? I was looking on line and found this link...

I am not sure it will work but the dealer quoted me $250-299 just to replace the sensor and after almost hitting the floor I figured I should at least look for an alternative.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone replaced a valve stem on their TPMS? I think I need to get a OEM stem kit as the Dormans say they only work on their products.

new sensor at sewel is approx. 52.00 + ship install is dismount tire install new tps install tire bal re-mount and then re-program should not be more then labor 90.00 or less + buy your own part

Discount tire should have rebuild kits available to re-stem it, at least they claimed to when I just had them fix a flat for me.

I put the spare on which surprisingly uses the same rim and not a generic spare rim. If I put a regular valve stem in the old tire and reprogram the car to register the new tire pressures, would it only register the 4 with TPMS or does it automatically look for 5?

When the tire pressure sensors are set they include the spare tire . It is the registered as the fifth tire so in case you have to use it. If your spare were to lose pressure even if it is not installed on the car then you would get a warning on the dash just like any tire on the car.

I was afraid you were going to say that. I guess I have to pony up $275 for one new TMPS. SOB! I am glad to hear they at least changed the way the TMPS Valve stems are designed so if the tip snaps off, only the valve stem has to be replaced and not the whole TPMS system.

One thing that may have happened is the valve stem cap could have corroded to the stem. I would look at using plastic caps to prevent this.

When you order a set of tps they come with rubber or plastic valve caps. My sc430 came with metal caps from the factory

At the Toyota dealer where I have both my GX and ES serviced, when a vehicle is in for service and if they see metal caps, they routinely replace them with plastic caps just to prevent the potential for the problem that you describe.

I went to the Lexus dealer and they wanted $350 to replace the TPMS. Needless to say there is no way in HELL I am paying that much for a new TPMS. So, I went home, took the TPMS off the spare and put it on the tire that had the broken one. I put a regular rubber valve stem on the spare and dropped the broken stem TPMS into the spare tire. Low tire light is off and now I just have to hope I never need the spare tire or it's going to rattle a bit.
