Default 2004 GX470 with Synthetic Oil

I have a 04 Gx 15K Miles and needed to know if there are owners who use Mobile 1 full Synthetic Oil. I use this on my 94 Camry and really like the performance.

Currently my dealer services the Gx but I was wondering if I could change the oil to full Synthetic. Any recommendations

BTW, I am located in Northern CA

I use Mobil1 full syn on my 03 every 6months or 5K miles. I DIY it. I choose full syn so I do 2X/YR compared to the alternative. Like to get my hands greasy once in a while. Your 04 has 15K miles only? WOW.

I have been using Mobil 1 in my GX since 10,000 miles and I now have 50,000. No problems at all, I take mine to the dealer with my oil and do not have any issues.

I switched to Mobil One Synthetic at 45,000 miles when I bought the GX. It is a 2006 model, and it had a lot of highway mileage prior to me owning it. The reason for the switch is the viscosity consistency, which is a big deal here in Maine, where we get some VERY cold weather which causes increased engine wear with conventional oil. The normal oil change intervals on the GX is 5,000 miles. I have the plan of doing 7,000 before my next oil change. I am also considering the Valvoline synthetic at the next oil change due to price, and that the oil recommended by Toyota is Valvoline anyways. Switching to synthetic is costlier, but it does not void any warranty, and will reduce engine wear. As far as noticable improvement in performance? I don't think you can experience any type of change in performance, aside from a placebo level of effect.

I have used Mobil 1 full syn on my '03 GX470 since I bought it with 64,000 miles...every 6-9 months or roughly 3-5K miles. I have used Mobil 1 on my GS400 when I bought it with 33,000 miles...currently has 130,000 miles and no issues whatsoever.

I use Mobil One for my 2004. I set the interval on the computer at 7500. Just did the 3rd change so 22.5k. Seems fine I guess...in the end its just oil.

Use conventional and change it more, synthetic and change it less. I suspect the motor isn't going to wear out from anyones oil choice as long as you change it somewhat regularly. Something else will go **** up first.

I use full Synthetic on my GX, serviced by Stevens Creek.

But separate question, what do you use car for, if 5-6 years old car has 15K on it (that's less than 3K a year)? A few drives a year to Tahoe from here would give you this to start with .

And you do know that you need to change oil/service car based on time not mileage (in your case), right?

Are you talking about your local Toyota dealer recommending Valvoline? Because ExxonMobil supplies the Toyota branded oil in the United States....

It's funny how many posts you see over time from people who change to a different brand of oil or different base stock and report that the engine "runs smoother," or something similar. Good ole placebo effect.

What time interval do you recommend if the car doesn't see that much mileage?

Interestingly most dealers will recommend 5,000 miles or 3 months. The fact is you can stretch it 6 months or even longer if you don't make that many miles in that period. The only thing I would recommend is that when you go through the seasons (winter/summer) you should change the oil, so that works out to more or less 6 months anyway.

Also, it turns out that new oil has elements that can harm your catalytic converters. These elements dissipate relatively quickly, and are not present in the used oil. So changing oil too often can be harmful, who knew.

Before my GX, I had a 1995 Toyota Avalon I bought in 1997 with 37K miles. I used Mobil 1 synthetic and (gasp) Fram oil filters. I changed the oil/filter every 10K miles and when I traded it in last month for my GX, it had 240K miles and ran like new. I kept telling myself I'd buy a new car when the Avalon started to have issues. Long story longer: It never did and I finally gave up waiting to buy a new car. I can only hope the GX is as reliable (I think it will be).

Based on my experience with the Avalon, I think anyone changing their synthetic oil every 3-5K miles is wasting their money (or is listening to the dealers and oil companies who have a vested interest in frequent oil changes).
