Default 2nd Gen Gs400 muffler/resonator delete questions

im bringing my 1998 gs400 in tomorrow to get some work done to the exhaust. Just wondering what would be best. I want it loud and aggressive, but not overly loud. I read that cutting out all the resonators and mufflers doesn’t sound good. I was thinking about cutting out the back two mufflers aswell as one of the resonators. Opinions?

There are dozens of videos on YouTube. I think every combination of straight pipes, silencer deletes, and aftermarket mufflers has been recorded and posted there. You can check 1UZ swaps and SC400 clips in addition to GS400 videos, for inspiration.

Hell, why not just remove the exhaust all together?
Otherwise “sounds good” is subjective and your plan could adversely affect performance and mileage.

Throw on some FlowMasters and call it a day or just get a mustang etc.

Default The exhaust is crucial for performance

My car has the cats gutted and the resonator is hollow as well. The car was already that way when I purchased it. Mine has factory headers and factory mufflers. I think it’s too loud all the time the car should only be aggressive sounding at wide open throttle. By having no restriction in your exhaust system you’ll lose torque throughout the full range of acceleration. Plus your oxygen sensors will quickly go bad and you’ll immediately get way lower gas mileage. So if you want a little bit more aggressive sound try a different intake and get rid of the air intake silencer box.

This brings back old memories.

I replaced the resonator to Ltuned exhaust back in 98 on GS400. The start note is great and over sound is very pleasing. The only and only down side is the drone inside the cabin which is most pronounced at cruising speed. I decided to keep the original resonators and have moved them 3 times but never put them back on.

Take a ride in a GS with the new exhaust and decide for yourself.

I removed the back 2 resonators years ago and had them straight piped. I left the stock mufflers. I loved how it sounded

When we got our car, it had a bit of a "rumble"... exhaust leaks in the X-pipe. Sounded kinda good, yet rusted out more, then became un-drivable. Put in a replacement X-pipe, with (2) new O2 sensors (one was throwing a code, couldn't get either out, so just put new ones in). Kinda like the muted luxury-sedan sound... if we want "race", we'll drive the Miata. Also, didn't feel any noticeable change in power, with the exhaust, before/after.
