From the service manual. I have a 300, but the 400 is in the book as well.

You can certainly go with a different brand if you wish, but I'm not sure if a drain and fill is the best idea, as you'd be mixing the two different fluids. Also, I'm not sure I'd attempt a tranny flush if it's never been done before and your car has higher mileage.

If you don't want to flush you could also just replace most of the fluid by simply disconnected the cooler line at the rad and let the car pump out the fluid. I think there is a DIY using this method somewhere here. Basically you disconnect the cooler line turn the car on for about 10 -15 seconds to let the car pump out tranny fluid into a bucket. Repeat this a few times and add fresh fluid whenever you have pumped out a quart or more. Keep doing this until you have replace about 12 quarts. Check to make sure you are the correct fluid level when you are done.

I just drain 2 qts in a glass jar from the pan and replace with 2 new qts every oil change. I use Amsoil. I'd rather use a synthetic and from what I have researched the Toyota IV is a great fluid, it's just not synthetic.

keep on filling till the fluid thats coming out changes to a nice clear/red. shut car off and top it off. run the car again, shift through gears, top it off. go for a drive and check the fluid level again. done
