Default 2003 GS300 Hard to start after fill up...

My buddy has a GS300 that is hard to start after he fills the tank. I googled and other cars have simular problems that point to a bad, stuck open purge valve. If that is the case here, an someone point me to it on this car?

Bump, any help on this yet? It's still happening after 3 o2 sensor replacements, exhaust manifold replacement, and some other basic servicing like injector cleaning etc.

purge valve or evap canister would be my first guess. there should be an emissions diagram on the underside of the hood.

beyond that, could be a failing crank sensor. that has a tendency to cause a hard start on warm start on lots of cars.

I seen situations when I worked in Toyota where overfilling caused gas to somehow enter the canister and cause issues...I want to say the tech replaced the canistet, this was a year ago I wish I can tell you more

Well, this situation has worsened. The other day the car was hard to start and drove real rough for about a mile after fill up. It almost shut off and it is now happening after fueling 3/4 of a tank. He stopped filling it all the way up. The bad thing about this episode was it happened 400 miles from home.

So the dealer has the car now and they told him that he has a bad cat and o2 sensor shorting out. So, they are now treating more symptoms and not finding the problem. This trip will cost him $1,900.

This all started the first fill up after a "tune up" at the dealer. I asked the parts department if they had a purge valve and they took 3 hours to tell me that they were not aware of the part. The next time it fails to start he is going to trade it in. It's a shame because the car is spotless.

Not sure of the codes. He has the car back and has the same problem. Surely the dealer understands the codes.

The car went back to the dealer yesterday I think. Today my buddy was shopping for cars all over the place and is thinking about cutting bait.

The dealer called him around 4 I guess and told him that he had a bad purge valve. The part was on order ($180) and when they got it in they would replace it. They swapped it out of another car there and it cranked fine after fill up. Swapped the old one back and they said it failed to start after fill up (they were draining the tank between fill ups).

Thanks goodness they finally found it and he will be happy with his super nice Lexus in a few days. Hurrah!!!
