New Starter will not start??
Hey CL fam it's been a min.
1998 Gs400 220k miles (still pulls hard)
Starer died yesterday morning. Got a rebuilt one for $70 plus $250 labor.
After the mechanic installed everything and bolted back up the starter engages, but does not turn the engine. Mechanic says the starer is bad, good thing it came with a year warranty, but now he has to take the manifold back off and charge again for the labor. Anyone know how to get the engine to turn.
I did search and found out tapping the starter may work, and tightening the bolts to. Anyone ever experience this, any suggestions on how tot the starter working without doing the labor again?

re-tighten the bolts, even though you may think its tight it might not be. i had to go back 3 or 4 times cranking it each time till it engaged, its a PIA but once it s done its over. At first when installed it i cranked it and the starter just spun went back and tightened then it barely caught but grinded mainly, went back like 2 more times and it finally engaged and now starts like a champ each time. i got a 400 as well.

Take it out connect jumper wires to the starter from the car and see if the teeth jump up or does it just spin in place. If the engine doesnt turn the starter is pushing something out of place when it is installed and it could be easy as just fixing the positioning. Try some stuff yourself before getting ripped at the mechanic.

do check your cables.... if i were you.. i go head and change out the cables.... they do get corroded inside... you be surprise.... but do test the starter too.. but with that many miles.. i would change the cables... it happen to me so i want to just share with you just incase.....

Update
Finally running again
The rebuilt starter was defective, so I had to pay for labor twice.
Had the mechanic choose the starter so if it was defective, they would take care of the labor.
Let this be a lesson people cover your butt.
End result was $570.00 with lifetime warranty
