Winter Tires for 2000 GS400?
I sold my GS400 to a coworker. I never drove it in the winter here in Mn, but he's going to have to. And with the current tires on there, driving in the snow with them is not an option.
So he has 4 stock 16" wheels with junk rubber and needs to get winter tires.
I was looking on tire rack and there are 2 choices.
The stock size which is 225/55/16
and and alternate size
215/60/16
What do you guys that run winter tires on 16" use for size? I think he's going to get Blizzaks as I have always had good luck with them here.

I'm i the same boat. I have a truck but want to sell it. I just don't want to be stuck with my GS3 in bad snow though. I wonder if winter tires will really help because my first rear wheel drive car, I crashed at 16 turning too fast. Ever since then, every RWD vehicle I've ever driven in the snow feels like it's going to wipe out.

I will never drive another year in Mn or anywhere with snow without them. They make that much of a difference. Night and day. Just get some for the 300. He's not debating, he's getting them, just need to figure out which size. I am thinking the 215 due to narrower tire to chop through the snow.

Yes man, go with the narrow tire for winter. I didn't get a choice when I got mine and have some rather wide Blizzaks on my 17s here in MN. If I know it's going to snow more than 1/2 inch I usually take the 4x4 to work just to be safer.

Blizzaks will make a HUGE difference on a RWD. Believe me. I drive diff. Cars during winter(I'm a car dealer) and I notice the difference right away on vehicles that have Blizzaks

umm i got some tires for you for cheap if your friend wants them. Narrower is better for driving on snow. Then again this is a car, so too much snow and you are going no where even if you have studded nokian's. Wider is better for ice with a dedicated snow tire, since you have a bigger patch on the ground. I have used a gs for a winter up here a couple years back and it did a lot better than I thought, but you had to know how to drive. For real winter conditions I haves suvs now. Had LX's with winter tires, but the traction system on it was crap and the fact it got me 10mpg on premium fuel was unacceptable. So I got me an Fj this year, but have not tried it in the snow yet. If you are driving on mostly ice less than 1-2" of snow I would take a GS with snow tires over an LX470 with snow tires. If you want to go out when there are 3 foot drifts out there then the LX comes out on top. Then when you get the LX stuck, you start wishing for a vehicle with diff locks on it. haha sorry for the rant my fellow Minnesotans, I would move down south and drive a corvette year round in a heartbeat but my GF does not like that idea...

sequoia with All Terrain Tires SUCKS in ice, good in deep snow. Will try dedicated winter tires this season.

Tried to make this the ultimate winter rig but failed. By the time the A-TRAC system figures out you are stuck, you have yourself in powder up to the frame. So we will see how an Fj Cruiser with the same winter tires does.

There's number of excellent snows out there - Michelin, Nokkian, Geslavid, Blizzak. Just make sure your friend gets a good brand name and the best ones he can afford.
Also, sometimes in snow it's better to switch off VSC.
