So when I start my car in the morning after it has been sitting in the cold all night long the car will make a weird whining sound that gets louder as I rev the engine. However, as the car begins to heat up the sound will fade away. So when I first start driving I hear the sound throughout the whole RPM Band, even at idle. About 5 minutes later I can only hear the sound when revving past 2k RPM and then it just completely fades out. Any ideas? I just had my Water Pump and Timing Belt done but my car was making the sound even before I had these done. I have been hearing the sound for a month now, only when it is very cold out and it is the first time the car is started for the day. My car has 140,000 miles. I will post a video of the noise when I get a chance I wanted to do it today but since I have already driven my car it is too warm and I cannot get it to make the noise.
Does it make the same sound a treadmill makes when you start it up? I'm curious now too, my car seems to do that, if I don't let it warm up sufficiently.
Hmm idk about a treadmill when it is starting up since I'm not exactly sure what that would sound like but I'll get a video up when I can hopefully my car will cooperate and make the sound tomorrow.
The Toyota power steering pump reservoirs (on top of/beside and connected to the pump housing) have a metal mesh screen on the bottom of them. This is the "filter" Sometime that filter gets clogged. I had that problem, it would get clogged about once a year as the pump deteriorated from having the wrong fluid in it. Cleaned the filter screen, refilled up Dexron-III (Now Dexron-IV) everything was OK after that.

Hey, where in Tx are you?
EDIT: Never mind, just looked. I lived in Greatwood back in the day, right off of 59.
Here is a video sorry for the bad sq I would have had some one press the gas and filmed from the front of the car but I was all by myself. Anyways you can here the sound near the end of the video it is a loud screeching sound.
I had this problem a few months ago, I changed the power steering fluid and it took care of it. dont use regular power steering fluid, I recomend toyota tranny fluid
Just clearing this up, but use Transmission Fluid for the Power Steering? And changing the Power Steering Fluid would make sense since I've never had it swapped out. Thanks for the help.

if this turns out to be a PS issue,i have a ps pump im almost giving away for nothing off a 2001 but it has a little back story, PM me if u need it....and i will tell you the back story
sounds like pulley, does the noise changw when you turn the steering wheel right to left?
I don't think so it just gets louder and faster as the car revs up. My dad thinks its one of the tensioners holding the serpentine belt since that is where the sound is the loudest but I'm not sure.
I want to get it checked out but my car only makes the sound before everything is warmed up so if I drive to the shop and they start the car they will not be able to hear the sound because the car will already be warmed up.
