Transmission Whine in 1st and 2nd??
I just picked up my '98 GS400 last night, and the car has a unusually high-pitched whine (kind of almost like a high-pitched supercharger) when first accelerating through first and second gear...
Is that a problem or is it just common transmission noise like I hope it is...?

oh accessory belt might be it...
i just hope it isn't the tranny either, but i was just concerned since the noise is so...prominent. i'd figure if it was the tranny it wouldn't sound so "up-by-the-engine"

Try put in neutral and rev it, if it squeaks, it's mostly belts, usually a tighten of belts would solve the problem.
If it only happens on 1st and 2nd gear and not N, it's not anything good.
Does it whine when you accel slow? Or was it only when it's under high engine load?
Was it still doing it today? if not, did belts came in contact with water last night?

it doesn't make the noise when the revs are increased in neutral...
so i've ruled out both the belt and the alternator since it doesn't really correlate with engine load--any other ideas?
it's not really a "issue" right now, just a quick whine through first and second only when the revs are rising--when i put the transmission into M and engine brake with 2nd gear it doesn't make the noise either. (rather confusing)

Same whining noise, here

My trans is whinning as well. Shifts smooth and normal, which causes me to question a real transmission problem.
Could it be a Torque Converter issue?
This sound dumb, but I reallly started noticing it after I had new valve cover gaskets and sparks plugs installed. I doubt it's related.
The only other issue I've noticed is that when coasting from a stop, downhill, there's a hard shift from 1st to 2nd. I notice it mostly in a large parking lot or when in heavy traffic. No other shifting issues.
Anyone come up with any ideas on this thread?
