Help with Air Conditioning
Of course through the winter the AC is on ALL the time and worked perfectly. 1st warm day and it stops working. Took it to the Lexus dealership and my AC compressor has a leak in it. They quoted me $2400+to replace it
Any suggestions?
A: Is replacing it the only alternative?
B: Can I get the part somewhere used?
C: Any recommendations for mechanics in the Boston area?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about your AC. Are both of the sides blowing warm air? My problem is that the drivers sides blows cool and the passenger side blows warm air. I've been adding freon for the past year. I know it's not the correct thing to do, due to the environment, but it's cheaper for me than replacing the compressor.. Good luck..

You can try freon with a leak stopper in it.
Last year, I got a hole in my condenser, and when cheap and bought aftermarket. Well I regret it b/c it started to leak somewhere and I wasn't about to shell out money to put in another one so soon, so I bought some freon with leak stopper, and I think it swelled up the seal that was leaking and now no leaks. Well a very small leak, but hardly a leak.

Do you get cold air on one side in the winter and warm on the other? It maybe related to the servo motor talked about in this post or it could be your compressor. Either way let us know your diagnosis and the result...

My compressor died on me last year and I replaced it with one from ebay, it was from a salvaged GS. They gave me a six month warranty, it took me about 1.5 hours to remove and replace. It's been working ever since. Cost of compressor was around 200-250. Plus freon and oil about 15 bucks. Total savings 2100.00? Oh yeah, I am mobile a/c certified.

Thanks for the replys.
Of course since part of the diagnostic was to vacuum and recharge the unit it's working great for now. Depending on how bad the leak is I figure I've got a few days to a few weeks of AC. This at least gives me a few options.
sockfocks, which seller on ebay gave you a warranty?
Thanks
