Navigation and Tint
Hello All
I purchased a 2001 GS430 and it has tinted windows..after reading a thread someone here refers to navigation having a problem if the tint is metalic. I dont know what a metalic tint is but my tint is black.. its not like foil. The problem i am having is this.. sometimes when i am driving navigation looses its position. i could be changing highways and it still showing i am going straight. then it fixes itself. Lexus belives its tint..
any sugestioins. ?

I hate to say it, but the only way I can think of that you're really going to find out is to remove the tint to see if it helps.
Good luck! Oh, and welcome to ClubLexus!

i've got titanium tint all around (except the windshield) and I don't have any problems with my factory navigation. The only time I do experience problems with the GPS tracking is when the sky is cloudy, or if I am driving in a tunnel or long underpass.
Have you experience problems with the GPS tracking when the sky is clear and you're out in the open?
If you can see a little "GPS" icon underneath the direction indicator on the upper left corner of your nav screen, then your GPS antenna is receiving signal from the satellites.

you have to be really really careful when removing tint from the rear window. the defroster lines can be easily damaged, rendering the defroster useless.
i think there was a recent thread about removing tint. search for it and see what the ins and outs are to removing rear window tint.
good luck to you.

if anyone is interested if you have a NAV with antenna inside the car DO NOT put metalic Tint on your back window.. even high preformance tint. .I just riped of the high preformance tint and istalled regular tint and the navigation now works..

Metallic tint doesn't LOOK metallic. I had metallic tint put in my 99 GS400 about three weeks ago and i just had it replaced because I HATED the look of it. If you had any hint of color in your glass before the tinting was done then your windows will reflect a slight hue of that color (mine was green).
Do you know if your tint is factory/stock? If so, I highly doubt it's metalized. If your tint basically looks black without any kind of reflection it's probably got some dye in it and isn't metallic. I have a NAVI system and haven't had any problems with it. I mentioned this issue to the guy at the tint shop and he said it shouldn't affect any navigation system, so who knows.
Maybe you just need to upgrade your system? I know I do, I think mine is the original from '99. I was told by the dealer that last year's update had some problems and they were re-working it so I should wait until this fall before getting an upgrade to my system.
