Transmisson swap
i have a 93 gs300 and my automatic transmission is slipping. will i be able to use a used transmission from a sc300 or should i just rebuild my transmission? any advice will help me with my decision. thank you

Very expansive on this forum and also somewhat expensive. Read on the swaps involving the r154. I would not do the w58. Having owned a car with that transmission (86 cressida) and a car with the r154 (90 supra turbo), definitely go for r154.

Expensive yet bolt in for most Toyota and very strong. I've sold and bought several for a few hundred so not too bad. they can be had all day for under $800. I don't know anything About the z33 trans but doubtful it bolts up. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I love my R154 swapped Gs300. It will be prefect for when I drop an Aristo motor with a 63mm turbo

Nixspeed it definitely isn't bolt in (z33 trans). The common argument is that it's as strong as a 154, its newer, and cheaper to replace since even MK3 r154's seem to be dipped in platinum and baby tears according to the prices people want from them. The initial swap to z33 trans would probably cost a few hundred to a thousand more on the initial install, but should be cheaper in the long run (in theory).

How would it be cheaper in the long run? If it needs custom adaptor and clutch or whatever, even if the trans is cheaper it can't possibly be cheaper than bolt in? Plus the r154 can handle well over 1000hp with minor upgrades and stock will do 750hp so in most cases bulletproof and no need to upgrade at all. I just don't see how a trans only made for <10yrs can be easier to get than one made for close to 20yrs and in at least 4 different cars.

I've seen MC rebuilt trans' (yes more than one) eaten up in less than two years of street and track drifting. The THEORY is that a locally acquired z33 trans is better off in the long run. A 154 isn't necessarily a bolt in affair either when you consider the need for the custom driveshaft. Just playing devils advocate. Now the z33 may cost more to get it installed, but after it is, you're now replacing just a clutch. I could care less either way, I've never driven a z33 trans equipped car, and I did love my jzx100's 154, but how much does one of those cost in the states? 1500+? Then You'd still want to freshen it up with MC parts. At that point, I'd start looking into a v160 or maybe something else. And I realize not everyone is going to beat on their trans like I intend to. Just speaking from my point of view.

I got my soarer R154 for 400 bucks. Had to bang out the tunnel a bit to get it to fit, custom flange on the differential and a one piece driveshaft that cost me 200 bucks. I think I was into the swap a thousand dollars, which is great considering I bought the gs300 for under 800 bucks.
