Best place to buy CPO warranty or other extended warranties?
I've got a 13' GS with the factory warranty almost up. Looking for options on extended warranty and best pricing, thought there was a deal from a Toyota dealer on the board or something (couldn't find on search).

From what I have been told by several people is that since this car is a Lexus, you won't necessarily need a warranty, and even if you do get one the 3rd party warranties are close to useless.

I recently private purchased a 2010 Mini Cooper (I know..wth?) with 90k mi under BB value for my daughter. Knowing that Mini doesn't have the best track record, I elected for an extended warranty and after doing a lot of shopping, I bought a 12 month EW from USAA. It's basically bumper to bumper except for wear and tear items (battery, light bulbs, belts, tires, etc). Low and behold, 3 months after that, the transmission went wonky at about 65mph. Had it towed to the mini dealer who a day later claimed it was a valve body internal to the transmission and while it might be the cause, if they were pulling it and splitting to work it, they might as well replace it with something they can put a factory warranty against. So I went with that. While it was there I asked them for fix a known power window issue, reflash some programming issues and go through the other stuff as necessary replacing anything that was messed up.
The bill after all was said and done...$9,300 (about $5k was the transmission and a replacement axle).
So the details: the extended warranty was about $1,400, USAA limited their coverage to the current value of the car - $7,100, bill $9,300 so process all that and basically I had $5,700 of usable coverage. What I got back was basically a refurbished Mini with a new transmission with 2 year factory warranty and all the rest of the bugs and stuff gone. The cost $3,600.
So I would say that it's a good gamble if you have a car as unreliable as Mini can be but the gamble paid off (literally) for me. There is no more usable warranty for me and the mini but I think it provided a pretty good amount of coverage.
I don't think Lexus has that kind of reputation for needed an extended warranty but if it's peace of mind that you want, that I suggest shopping around and looking at their fine print for exact coverages. Certainly check with USAA before you go with anyone else. $1,400 for a year of BTB coverage was hands down a great price.

Search the web for Troy Dietrich or Jerry Johnson at Midwest Toyota. They will sell you the Lexus/Toyota backed warranty (not a 3rd party one) - at a rate that is considerably lower than what you would normally get at your dealership.
