Default Caution: Rusty License Plate Bolts

So I had a quite eventful Sunday morning this past weekend. I have been noticing on my past few washes that I've been getting a few rust spots on my back bumper that I've had to clay off. These rust drippings were coming off of my rear license plate bolts. Turns out, the dealer installs Zinc plated bolts that tend to rust super quickly.

What I thought would be a quick trip to Home Depot to replace them with Stainless Steel turned out to be a nightmare. The bolts were already seized and rusted into the trunk lid. I needed to drill through the bolts with a 1/4" bit, then needed to re-thread the holes. Now I installed some Stainless bolts along with those little silver caps you can purchase to cover them from your local auto parts store.

Just an FYI to all to check your bolts out sooner than later and have them replaced before you run into the same issue I had.

Good to know! Thanks for the info. I went out and checked my bolts too and saw rust spots on the head of the, nut. Also for those who have front license plates, they should check those too.

Yeah I apply anti-seize lubricant. I used the plastic ones and that got destroyed and broke off.

I had the same problem, plus my matte black frames started to chip. So, I plasti-dipped my license frames and the bolts.
