I don;'t see how a rear facing seat would fit well without having to slide the front seat way up...

Its not bad I have two in my GS. The only thing I have encountered is for my new born, (the base we have, all the way up still doesn't compensate for the bucket type seating enough so I have to put a towel under the base so my baby's head doesn't fall forward (poor little guy)

if we were able to fit a darn graco in the back seats of my 3gs, you all should be able to do that in the 4gs just fine. the car already has more rear cabin space, especially forward facing
like dj mentioned, newborn rear facing carrier is the biggest enemy, but i think with front passenger compromising a bit it should work

I would keep little kids in the RX and out of a 4GS - too much mess. Heck, a minivan or Honda Element with the rubber interior would be more appropriate. It's not just the mess, but bending down to insert / remove a kid from a car seat in a low sedan messes with your back.

I can't speak for rear-facing, but for front-facing, it is a little tight and my son can easily put his feet on the front seat.
Also had to remove the rear head rest for it to fit properly, which I didn't have to do with my previous A6.
