Okay, just making sure. As for the closer, if all it does is the locking it into place portion, I wonder what the strap on the trunk lid is for.
The strap is what physically pulls the trunk down for it to latch. The latch itself does not move - more or less a basic trunk latch/mechanism with an electrical release solenoid. It does however have a very strong little spring loaded arm that is compressed when the lid is latched yet pushes the door open slightly once the latch is released etc.
Many older American cars utilized a latch that actually moved up and down. IE: Lexus utilizes the wind up strap to pull the lid into the latch, others would latch then the entire latch mechanism would mechanically lower - pulling the lid closed. The later was prone to failure.
Both designs are basically there for one reason, to prevent you from having to slam the trunk closed - identifying luxury/refinement etc...
