Default Did the Lexus 4-Door RWD/AWD Coupe Die with the 3GS?

I've been trying to get myself psyched up for the 4GS, but I just can't do it. I like the car, don't get me wrong... I will probably get one at some point. I'm just not dying to get one yet. My biggest complaint is that stylistically, I think it took a step backward with the rear of the car. I know that trunk space was a concern with the 3GS, which could have been the reason, but I really miss the way the back of the 3GS looked so sporty with its coupe like proportions. I like the CLS, A7, and A5 Sportback (5-door Europen version) as well, though I'd much rather own a Lexus than Audi or Mercedes. I'm a Lexus fanboi, what can I say?

So now, I'm looking at the current lineup and I just don't see where Lexus could have another "CLS" style car. The new ES coming out is exactly what I wanted from the 4GS, but alas it is FWD and not getting my patronage. I'm driving a rental A6 (FWD) and I hate it just for that fact. It really does make a difference to me in the driving experience.

The next gen IS or LS may see more coupe-like proportions, but the IS is too small for me and the LS a slightly too large. If I had to get one or the other, I'd definitely go LS.

Anyways just venting. I'm looking at pics of the 3GS and to me, it still looks like the newer design. Add LED headlight/tail light treatment to it and voila.

The more I look at the 4GS, the more I like it. Rear looks like crap, but the front is hot.

The 4GS is not a bad looking car, but really it has been placed into the mainstream midsize sport/lux with...
5 Series
E Class
A6

But here is the thing about it... the 3GS was meant to compete with the aforementioned in the first place. It somehow transcends the lines of 4 door coupe and 4 door sedan. Lexus decided, with the 4GS, to place the car squarely in the 4 door sedan arena. Its a bit of a shame if you ask me.

The good news is... the 3GS style will age more gracefully because of it.

Completely agree with jre002. If the ES was RWD, I'd definitely consider it, as IMO, it's the best looking Lexus (LFA excepted).

Parked my car on the street yesterday to go I a store, when I came out a new 4gs was Parker behind me. My car looked a bit smaller, but I think our design is a lot better. 3GS looked almost European, 4gs not so. Also the dash is just not up to my liking, navigation slot looks big enough to swallow a baby or a little dog. I got into my car and left with a smile.

Maybe the ES design staff switched the concept drawings that the GS designers made when they weren't looking. Maybe that would explain why the ES looks how the GS was supposed to look. 100x better looking than the GS. Smoother front end treatment and coupe-ish rear quarter.

So this means the only car to buy after 3GS would be the BMW 550i , they look better than ever, but Only with factory warranty for the length of ownership. Or a somewhat boring but reliable LS460.

Default 3GS was unloved by the automotive media set

I too agree the 3GS was the best looking of the lot, but it never got any love from the Buff Books. They said it was bland, boring looking etc. etc. They just can't bring themselves to praise a Lexus. The new one is a mess. Proportions are wrong, detailing fussy, and it really isn't that much roomier.
