Engine noise when cold (not injectors or time chain!)
Hi all,
I live in Sweden and I've recently bought my first Lexus, a 2006 GS300. Since I got it much of my motoring is about noises. The rattling interior is an issue alone that I'm not gonna bring up here right now, I'm sure most of us has read what there is to read about this already.
Worse is the kind of engine noise I'm experiencing. I've read plenty about the ticking injector noise, especially on the GS350. This seems to be normal and can hardly be heard on mine. Also I've read about the clattering noise upon start up, this happens on mine from time to time and is of course bad in itself. But since it's quite obvious that my engine suffers from the typical timing chain issue it doesn't worry me to pieces. The diesel-like knocking sound when the engine is loaded when cold DOES worry me!
It's fully hearable all the way to normal engine temperature, only then it almost disappears. I can't hear it at idle speed and not much when engine runs unloaded and "light" (highway cruising without pressing the pedal). But as soon as the engine i slightly loaded it's there. It's very much diesel-like and to my quite well-trained engine ear it's a typical piston rattle. Now you see that I'm worried!? I can hear it clearly from the driver's seat with all windows up.
I can't imagine a piston rattle on a car of this dignity! I have about 93000 km (approx 57000 miles) on the clock, usually I've heard this kind of noise on really worn and hard driven engines. Could it really be what I'm suspecting?
Another thing, isn't it really annoying with the crazy-revving engine upon cold start? 1600 rpm in cold winter mornings sounds nasty. Last time I experienced this on a car was on some old carburator engine from the seventies-eighties.
By the way, this seems to be a really nice and informative Lexus forum!
